28 May Bring on the Sweet Dreams with Cedarwood Essential Oil
I’ve heard it said that when you don’t like the smell of an essential oil, your body actually really needs it. In this case, I tend to believe it. When I was first introduced to Cedarwood Essential Oil, all I could smell was filthy, dirty socks. Definitively NOT my favorite oil!
At the time, I was beat down, tired and worn out. I was working 12 hour night shifts and was homeschooling my children. I had long ago lost the ability to nimbly bounce between days and nights. This was playing havoc on my body and I literally felt like I was falling to pieces.
The Effects of Too Little Sleep
For a few years, after my children being born, I was getting 1-3 hours of consecutive sleep at a time and I was at the point of desperation. The effects on the body of too little sleep are very serious, and I was already experiencing several of them. We are all familiar with the short-term effects of too little sleep – slower reaction time, difficulty processing information, memory and learning is affected, emotional unbalance and decreased immunity. Some of the long term problems that you can experience when you are not getting enough sleep are even more concerning, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety and even cancer.
Bring on the Sweet Dreams with Cedarwood Essential Oil
After a little research, I decided to buy some Cedarwood essential oil. It is a very affordable essential oil, and I tend to try those first. Cedarwood essential oil has a woodsy, warm and balsamic aroma. That sounded great to me, but in all honesty, my initial reaction was “BLECH!” But as I mentioned, I was desperate, so I resolved to get over the smell of it in order to be able to benefit from its’ many qualities. It is well-known for its’ ability to support healthy skin, as well as it’s ability to create a relaxing, calming and comforting atmosphere when diffused.
I’m a bit of a science nerd, and am fascinated with the components in Young Living’s Cedarwood – up to 90% sesquiterpenes! If you are not familiar with what sesquiterpines – do the research. They’re kind of a big deal!
On a more unscientific side, animals in the wild like to lie under the Cedarwood tree to sleep. Coincidence? Probably not. It apparently gives them a sense of protection and rejuvenation. I can see why. The first night I used Cedarwood, I put one drop on the back of my neck. I’m pretty sure I didn’t move the entire night. When I awoke, the next morning, I felt completely refreshed and not the least bit groggy. I don’t know if I can possibly express my elation, because good sleep is truly a life-saving miracle when you are sleep deprived!
Cedarwood Essential Oil for Nights and Naps!
I continue to use Cedarwood essential oil every single night, as well as for the short naps that I need in the afternoon before going to work for the night. As a night-shift worker, proper rest is so important! I love that I can still be be alert when my children need me and I can sleep the entire night, helping me to adjust between night shift and days with my family. I love this essential oil – and the crazy thing is, I’ve even come to enjoy the smell of it!
