My Body: The Skeletal System

My Body: The Skeletal System

Clark and Luci have always been very interested in how our bodies work.  We are constantly fielding interesting questions about bodily functions – especially at the table.  Unfortunately, despite this interest, we have neglected our studies in the My Body Series.

The Skeletal System

So far we have covered The Digestive System and The Respiratory System.  For the past several days, we have been talking about the skeletal system, or our bones.  The subject came up in several ways. First of all we had been studying the classic book, The Glorious Flight in our Five in a Row Curriculum.  While attempting to build and fly an airplane, Louis Blériot suffered several broken bones.  Another reason the subject of skeletons came up is because Halloween is approaching and I had done some decorating, including a couple of skeletons.

Clark and Luci LOOOOVE Halloween, so the skeletons quickly became favorites.  Clark quickly learned to draw a skeleton (better than I could!) and was asking about bone names and the function of joints.  Clearly time to jump back into our My Body Series!

I had bought this My Body book several months ago.  The illustrations inside perfectly fit the tracings we had done of Clark and Luci.  I’m all about saving money, but this book was too cheap and too convenient to pass up!

Learning About Bones and Joints

I photocopied a couple of the pages for each child and they colored in the bones with whichever colors that they chose.  In the meantime, we talked about the purpose of the different bones and the different types of joints. Then we watched a few videos to illustrate the points.

Of course, we had to act out all of the different joints, which included lots of laughing and dancing.  We also were able to find some great examples of joints around the house!

Once Clark and Luci had finished coloring and cutting out their bones (we just worked on the leg and feet bones), we got busy gluing and pasting them into the correct places on their traced, paper bodies, which we had taped behind their bedroom doors.

As a nurse, of course, I had to teach them the correct names for the bones. I’m quite sure they are not going to remember, but I figured they may as well know from the start that each bone has a name!

Luci’s little legs were a little short for the bones that we had colored and cut, but we managed to get them bones in place.

Don’t Miss the Other Parts of Our My Body Series

And that concludes our lesson on the bones of the body!  I absolutely love doing this series with the kids. They are so interested in each and every part of it!  If you would like to follow along, you can find the other parts to this series listed below.

Have fun!
