A Creative Way to Remember Even and Odd Numbers

A Creative Way to Remember Even and Odd Numbers

Clark has been struggling with remembering which numbers are odd and which numbers are even.  I get it – I couldn’t remember at his age either.  It seemed like a rather random designation to me.  Our brains are the same.  I know he needs a creative link to make the connection permanent, so we came up with a creative way to remember even and odd numbers.

Isn’t that just another awesome thing about homeschool, by the way?  We know our kids!  We know what they need and what they’ll respond to.

So we went to the library and took out several books on even numbers and odd numbers.  Most of them, though, were simply counting even numbers of penguins and odd numbers of elephants and I’m sorry people, but that’s not much use.  Then we found the book, “Even Steven and Odd Todd” which actually incorporated the numbers into some semblance of a plot.  After reading the book one time, Clark could remember which number was which.

To reinforce the book’s lesson, we made a visual of both Even Steven and Odd Todd.  We made Even Steven, looking very put together and Odd Todd looking something like a lunatic.  Now, if there is ever confusion, we pull out these two guys and check out who’s who.

The great part is, it has now been several weeks and he still remembers.  We have maybe only pulled out our Even Steven and Odd Todd twice since reading the book.  Success!
