Five in a Row

Our most recent Five in a Row book study was the story of Lentil, by Robert McCloskey. This is probably not a book I would have ever picked up at the library. It's odd title and simple cover belies the amusing story illustrations inside. Lentil is the story of a young boy, growing up in America, who longs for the ability to make music. Like some of us, he wasn't gifted with the ability to sing or whistle, but he found a way. Using the gift that he discovered he was able to save the day and bring the whole...

Remember testing the tongue mapping theory in elementary school? We were told that the tongue was divided into different sections. Each section was meant to taste either salty, sour, bitter or sweet. I clearly remember sitting in class, watching the teacher go around the class, dropping a drip of mystery fluid onto each student's tongue. According to the teacher and the tongue map, we were only supposed to taste bitter at the back of our tongue, sweet at the tip, and bitter and sour on the sides. I remember sitting in confusion. First of all, why would the tongue have a useless...

We've been reading the story of Lentil, by Robert McCloskey. A big part of this story revolves around music, which led us on an entertaining rabbit trail all about music, sound, instruments, and bands. These rabbit trails are my favorite part of homeschooling. As we pursue our interests, the children come alive with delight, and learning is simply a by-product of our experiences. In the story, when unable to sing, a boy named Lentil saves up his money to buy a harmonica. He then decides to become an expert in it. Becoming an expert in any musical instrument takes years of...

We have been reading Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, as part of our Five in a Row (FIAR) curriculum. This is a classic children’s book, written in 1939. It is about a man who takes his well-loved steam shovel, Mary Anne, on an adventure to show that they are just as good – or better than all of the new gas, electric and diesel shovels. Of course, we read the book several times, but Clark and Luci enjoyed watching the movie for one of the days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZtXtbZn5f0 Community Helpers and Transportation The story of Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel includes a lot of community helpers. Many of...

We’ve been studying the classic children’s book, Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel as part of our Five in a Row homeschool curriculum. This is the story about Mike Mulligan, who, along with his beloved steam shovel, Mary Ann, finds himself caught in a changing world. In fact, the book was written in 1939, around the time when steam shovels were being replaced with diesel engines, which were cheaper and simpler to use. Learning How a Steam Shovel Works Clark was immediately fascinated by the steam shovel in the story and wanted to know exactly how it worked. We learned that the first, crude steam...

As the weather slowly turned cool, ushering in fall, our next Five in a Row adventure seemed an obvious one: How to Make an Apple Pie and see the World. Growing up, I have some wonderful memories of my parents taking us each fall to the apple orchards to pick bushel after bushel of apples. They were the best apples I have ever tasted. Right off the tree, they were cold, crisp and delicious. Unfortunately, we don’t have the opportunity to pick bushels of apples in apple orchards, but we can bake an apple pie! How to Make and Apple Pie With the assistance of...
