Today's project is a paper sloyd conical flower holder. I imagine that this little project would be lovely in the spring when wild flowers are abundant here in Texas. Unfortunately, we are currently in the middle of winter, which features brown grass and dormant bushes. However, this is a quick and simple craft that is perfect for those cold, rainy days when it's not so pleasant to be outside. This is Project #3 from the 3rd year of paper sloyd, from the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. It is a similar...

I am always excited to learn a new skill. Today, as we create our next paper sloyd creation, a pyramidal catch-all, our main tool is going to be a compass, instead of the ruler. This project (#2 from Year 3) introduces to us a new way to create a shape. In our video, you are going to see our first time, learning to manage and manipulate a compass. It's a little awkward for a child, it's another skill that we will need to practice. Materials Needed The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich A compass An Exacto...

How are we starting the third year of paper sloyd lessons already?! We have created so many interesting models so far. I'm excited to see what we have in store for us in this next section. Today, we will be starting with a paper sloyd pocket-comb case. Materials Needed The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich A cutting mat An Exacto knife A pencil A ruler Glue Good quality paper, at least 3" x 5½" (this is a good time to use scraps from other projects) Happy Handicrafts Video: How to Create a Paper Sloyd Pocket-Comb Case https://youtu.be/JcUqXW8QUUk This was a fairly simple...

Not to be dramatic, but I feel somewhat triumphant, as we have just completed our second year of paper sloyd. As a homeschooler, I had read about the importance of sloyd, but it was this mysterious mountain that I was too overwhelmed to climb. I didn't have a solid understanding of what sloyd really was, I didn't understand the purpose of it, and I couldn't imagine adding another thing into our already busy schedules. Last year, I decided to buckle down and face my fear. I dug deep, learning all about this subject. The more I learned,...

Today we will be making our final model in our second year of paper sloyd. We will be making a pen box, which is project #14 from the second year, from the book Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. This project is fairly simple, with minimal measuring and cutting. The final result is a little box that could have many uses. We may or may not have used ours in a ridiculous way, but it's kind of cute, if you happen to love hamsters. Materials Needed The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah...

Today we will be making the next project in our paper sloyd series, which is a cute little ribbon box. This is project #13 from the 2nd year from the book Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. As we work our way through this book, you will notice that each project is designed to teach newer and more complex skills, and this project is no exception. There are a lot of measurements in this project and the extensive cutting with the Exacto knife required concentration and focus. Our efforts were rewarded, though, as...
