We have just started to read Harold and the Purple Crayon as part of our Five in a Row curriculum.  I love to start our new studies off with a celebratory bang!  Clark and Luci actually had the idea of having a picnic of just pies, just like Harold did in the story.  It ended up raining on our picnic day, but that didn’t stop us from making tons of pies for dinner! Despite being in the middle of winter, here, we started rowing our Five in a Row book, Very Last First Time on a day in January when the temperature was 75 degrees!  Clark and Luci have been longing for snow, so I thought this book would be a great start.  Or at least we can pretend! Clark and Luci love painting.  So how do I make it even more special and exciting?  Add a little glitter, of course!  While working on our art project today, we added a couple of extra ingredients to create glittering, crystallized watercolor paints.  Everything’s better with glitter, right? Clark has been struggling with remembering which numbers are odd and which numbers are even.  I get it – I couldn’t remember at his age either.  It seemed like a rather random designation to me.  Our brains are the same.  I know he needs a creative link to make the connection permanent, so we came up with a creative way to remember even and odd numbers. As part of the science component in our study of the book Very Last First Time, we decided to look at some of the properties of salt water.  Our first experiment was to look at how evaporation would separate salt water.
