How to Build an Igloo with Marshmallows

How to Build an Igloo with Marshmallows

We are reading Very Last First Time for our Five in a Row study. The story takes place in an Inuit village in northern Canada. As we read the story Clark and Luci became fascinated with igloos and wanted to build one. This tends to very difficult when you live in Texas and the temperatures are a ridiculously warm 75° in January! So, very logically, we decided that we would figure out how to build an igloo with marshmallows.  I didn’t get much objection from Clark and Luci either.

What You’ll Need:

I suggest using whatever is around your home.  We used some miniature marshmallows, some pre-made frosting and a disposable plastic cup (a paper bowl would maybe do better, but we didn’t have any around the house) with a hole cut in it as the entrance to the igloo.  I covered the disposable cup in frosting and let the kids go at it.

Things started off well enough.  It wasn’t that difficult to put a bunch of marshmallows on the top of the cup.  But the sides proved to be a little more challenging.

Things started to get sticky, the entryway was hard to make and really, how do you not eat marshmallows?

Luci got distracted, counting the marshmallows, and I had to practically pry fistfuls of marshmallows out of Clark’s hands.  Whew!  I’m not prepared to deal with that level of sugar-rush.

I think if I did this again, I would use the disposable, paper bowls.  I think the marshmallows would stick much easier, but as it is, the children enjoyed it and we learned we don’t really want to build a real igloo today.
