20 Feb How to Create a Paper Sloyd Conical Flower Holder
Today’s project is a paper sloyd conical flower holder. I imagine that this little project would be lovely in the spring when wild flowers are abundant here in Texas. Unfortunately, we are currently in the middle of winter, which features brown grass and dormant bushes. However, this is a quick and simple craft that is perfect for those cold, rainy days when it’s not so pleasant to be outside.
This is Project #3 from the 3rd year of paper sloyd, from the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. It is a similar project from our last model and in fact, uses the same paper, so I hope you saved it! Because we did the majority of the measuring in the last project, this model will not take long. It’s also a great lesson in how to use the scraps of paper that are so often created while crafting!
Materials Needed
- The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich
- A compass
- An Exacto knife
- A pencil
- A ruler
- Glue
- Quality paper, left over from Project #2, we are using 8½” x 11″ scrapbook paper, which worked perfectly
- A cutting mat

A Longer-Term View of Paper Sloyd
I think, sometimes, that these models do not always seem useful. But it’s important to remember the ultimate purpose of paper sloyd is to develop skills for future handicrafts. This became abundantly clear for me on Valentine’s Day. I had been too busy with work to take the children out shopping for small gifts and cards. Imagine my delight when I got up on Valentine’s Day and found 3 different kinds of beautifully made paper sloyd envelopes awaiting us. My daughter Luci, had taken the time to write each person in the family a note, which she then enclosed in unique paper sloyd envelopes. I was so proud of her – and even more happy to see the results of our efforts.
Stick with paper sloyd! You will begin to see results that will really surprise you!
