03 Jun How to Create a Paper Sloyd Letter Holder
After a stressful week, it was nice to sit down with my daughter to make this paper sloyd letter holder. Art truly washes away the stresses and cares of everyday life. Creativity brings joy, and we found ourselves laughing at our challenges and mistakes.
This was Project 17 from the third year from the book Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. This wasn’t an easy model to create, but our struggles were worth it, because the final result is genuinely lovely and functional. Although the design of this model is pretty, it really makes a difference to invest in beautiful, quality paper. We combined a solid piece of thick cardstock for the back with the pockets made from a matching patterned piece of scrapbook paper. It may just be me, but I’m more motivated to be accurate and precise in order to create something beautiful when the papers are stunning.
Materials Needed
- The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich
- A cutting mat
- An Exacto knife
- A compass
- A pencil
- A ruler
- Glue
- Quality paper (the book recommends Bristol Board). We used 2 complementing pieces of scrapbook paper.

This project involves several steps and ends in the assembly of all the pieces. We found the entire creation to be rather long, but the result is so rewarding! Follow along with us in our video – we’d love for you to craft with us!
Can you believe we are almost done with the 3rd year of paper sloyd? Whether you started with us in the first year, or found us along the way, we are glad to have you with us! Remember that everyone will work at their own pace, depending on age and ability. We got started later, so we were able to go a little faster.
There are several supplementary models in the back of the book, which we promise to craft with you, but we may take a few weeks off for a vacation. I hope you are all enjoying your summer – whether you homeschool through the year or not.
Remember, if you find that life is getting too stressful, there is always art!
