How to Create a Paper Sloyd Silk Winder

Here we are in mid-February, every homeschoolers’ favorite month. It’s cold outside, too wet and muddy to go outside and enjoy nature. Yet despite the dreary day, we found ourselves eagerly anticipating our handicraft class. The ability to be creative brings a bright spot to our afternoons, and today was no exception. Today we will be making a paper sloyd silk winder. This is the fifth supplementary model from the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. The supplementary models seem to be included as practice. They reflect the skills learned in previous lessons.

Now I doubt anyone has much need for silk winders these days, but I imagine this little piece could be used for any thinner thread.

This paper sloyd silk winder reminded us of the thread winders that we made previously. They were the fifth models from the second year in our book. Having made the thread winders, we found this project quite simple. I love that we found ourselves using techniques that we had learned previously. It shows how our skill set, and ability to think critically and problem solve, is expanding.

I hope you are following along with our paper sloyd adventures, and doing your own right along with us! If you just found us, a great place to get started would be learning about what exactly paper sloyd is. I do a deeper dive into this subject, as I was trying to learn more about it. You can read about it here – What is Paper Sloyd? And Why is it a Valuable Tool in Home Education? I’ve also made a summary for you of our first year, second year, and third year of paper sloyd.

Take your time. Work through each project. And most importantly, enjoy creating!
