19 May How to Create a Paper Sloyd Sliding Pencil Box
Today, we are going to be making a paper sloyd sliding pencil box. If you’ve been following along with us as we work through the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich, you’ll know that we are in the third grade, and this is the 15th model.
This project was a bit of a break from our increasingly difficult ones from the past few weeks. There was minimal cutting and measuring, and it came together quickly. Our favorite part? It’s totally useful! It’s important to us that our craft projects are useful – and we plan on using this paper sloyd sliding pencil box for the exact reason it was created!
Now, gather your materials and come craft with us! We’ll guide you through every step of the project!
Materials Needed
- The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich
- A cutting mat
- An Exacto knife
- A pencil
- A ruler
- Glue
- Quality paper (the book recommends Bristol Board). We used a 12″ x 12″ piece of thick scrapbook paper.

How did you do? I hope yours turned out well! I think the most important part of this project was making sure that we were accurate and precise. This helps the sides and ends to all fit so well together!
Can you believe we’ve logged almost 50 paper sloyd projects?! I can’t believe that we were so hesitant to do this in the beginning! But, like most things, we took it one step at a time, one small project at a time, and sometimes one small instruction at a time. This way we’ve slowly learned different skills, different techniques, and we’ve become better and better at cutting and measuring!
If you haven’t been following along with us since the beginning, now’s your chance to go back and start from the beginning! We put together a list of our entire first year, at A Practical Guide to Your First Year of Paper Sloyd, and our entire second year at A Summary of the Second Year of Paper Sloyd. Although everyone is more than welcome to enjoy our videos, we make them specifically with the homeschooling family in mind. We know homeschooling takes a village, and we’d love to be a part of yours! So come craft with us, and feel the joy that comes with creativity!
