If you’ve been following us in our Happy Handicrafts Crochet Series, you’ll know that we’ve created some beautiful items so far, all without a pattern. We chose to avoid written patterns initially for several reasons. First of all, reading a crochet pattern is like reading a foreign language. If you’re not familiar with all of the terminology and lingo, adding a pattern to our learning curve will only cause frustration and overwhelm. I also wanted you to see how crochet works without a pattern. If you can visualize the shape of an object, you can crochet it without a pattern!

However, in the real world there are many talented people who write very helpful patterns for some incredibly creative projects. And often, having the convenience of a pattern is what we are looking for. So, in this post / video, we are going to make a crocheted, chunky, scalloped blanket while learning the basics of reading a pattern. Download and print out the pattern listed above and follow along with the video (below). Let’s make something beautiful!

Materials Needed:

• Crochet Hook Set
• Lion Brand Hue + Me, 10 balls (I used the color charcoal) or any bulky weight yarn
• Scissors
• A large bore needle

In fact, I loved it so much that I’m tempted to make another crocheted, chunky, scalloped blanket, experimenting with a different yarn and color. I love having a mindless crochet project to be working on. I like to pull it out when watching a movie, when I have a few moments of quiet during the day, or when listening to my children read. It’s so relaxing to me, but at the same time productive.

I think my favorite part of this blanket is the texture. Its lacey enough to look sophisticated, but yet its thick enough to make a warm blanket. It’s perfect for styling over a chair or snuggling with in front the of the fireplace with a book.
