14 May How to Get Started with Needle Felting Using a Cookie Cutter
I am so excited to be starting a new handicraft! Today we are going to get started with needle felting using a cookie cutter. We’ve been working on paper sloyd for YEARS as part of our handicraft curriculum, and although it has been a great learning experience and confidence-builder, it is time to move on! We’ve decided to do needle felting for our next handicraft partly because it’s something that my daughter has been working on for a couple of years, but also partly because it’s something I’ve been itching to do! So now I am going to learn alongside with you.
We are going to start with a very simple project that everyone, even our youngest crafters can do – we are going to attempt needle felting using a cookie cutter. A cookie cutter will help us keep everything in the perfect shape, with nice edges, while allowing us to concentrate on the felting aspect of this craft.
The plan is to gain confidence so that we can move on to a more complicated project next time.
Materials Needed
The items below are all items that we have ordered and that we use. I recommend choosing from the list – just be sure to have a felting mat (a cover is optional), needles, a cookie cutter, finger guards (optional), and felting wool.
- Small Needle Felting Kit (includes needles and finger cots, does not include a felting mat)
- Needle Felting Mat (6″ x 6″)
- Needle Felting Kit (includes needles, finger guards, felting mat)
- Felting Wool (lots of options)
- More Felting Wool (50 colors)
- Felting Wool (72 pieces)

Don’t you just love the creativity that is available? You can choose any cookie cutter you like, and design it any way you desire. If you don’t like it, you can rip it out or add on to it. There is no limit to what you can do with needle felting.
We used a heart-shaped cookie cutter to make a gift label. As a second project (because you can’t stop at just one!), we made another heart-shaped design to use as an air-freshener in our clothes drawer. After dripping a few drops of essential oils on it, we placed it in our clothing drawer. It’s a beautiful way to keep clothes nice and fresh.
Whichever shape you chose, I hope it turned out fabulous. Now that you are confident needle felting with a cookie cutter, we are going to move on to our next project!
