19 Sep How to Make Your Dream Landscape with Needle Felting
We are coming close to the end of our needle-felting series, which makes me a little sad. It’s time to move on to another handicraft, and the only way I’m ok with this, is by telling myself that we are not abandoning our needle-felting hobby – we’re simply setting it aside for a bit. I know for sure that we will be revisiting this handicraft again, and when we do, we’ll be sure to include it on our YouTube channel, Happy Handicrafts. But before we end, I really wanted to create a landscape scene. So I came up with a plan to make our dream landscape with needle felting.
The plan was to pull ideas from our own travels, our imagination, travel magazines and brochures, and anything else that could provide inspiration for our dream landscape. I have a dream of visiting Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The towering mountains and trees framing the beautiful waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are my idea of perfection. So, using a souvenir book from a friend who had recently visited the area, along with some online images, we pieced together our dream landscape.
Our next step was to choose a frame. I had some 5″ x 5″ thick felt squares that I wanted to use as my base, so I wanted a square frame that was approximately 8″ x 8″ with a mat of 5″ x 5″. I found the perfect size at the secondhand store in our town for under $5. I love a good deal, so this made me so happy.
Drawing out our dream landscape was very helpful. The drawing is not set in stone, but it gives a general guideline, which I definitively used throughout the project. I also added color as a guide.
Materials Needed
- A frame of your choice
- A thick piece of felt as the base of your project (My advice is to stay around 6″ as this is a manageable size to start with.)
- A needle-felting mat
- A needle-felting kit
- A variety pack of wool roving
- Sewing scissors
Happy Handicrafts Video: Make Your Dream Landscape with Needle-Felting
I would encourage you to watch the video first, as it gives a good overview of how we worked the scene. Then come up with your own plan. It doesn’t have to be mountains – maybe your dream is the ocean, or a meadow of wildflowers. Let your imagination run. Remember you’re going to frame this! I put my completed scene in a spot that I look at every day. It makes me smile and enforces that dream in the back of my head of visiting Banff someday.
I completed my dream landscape with needle felting with a waterfall, which falls out of the scene. I love this 3D effect! See if you can add it to your scene. It may not be a waterfall, but maybe a bouquet of flowers, a tree, or even a pet.
Don’t forget to frame your work! Your hard work deserves to be displayed! And you deserve to see it displayed!
Thank-you for crafting with us and creating your own dream landscape with needle felting! Are you hooked yet?
