Learning about Flight with Paper Airplanes

Learning about Flight with Paper Airplanes

We’ve been reading the book The Glorious Flight as part of our Five in a Row curriculum.  This is an awesome curriculum based on classic children’s literature in which you read one book for 5 days in a row.  Each day, you focus on a different subject from the book.

The Glorious Flight is the story of the Frenchman, Louis Blériot, who worked for many years to build an airplane.  After many efforts and many failures, he was finally able to fly across the English Channel, winning a contest in the process.

I had chosen this book specifically because for weeks Clark had been asking questions about airplanes, how they stayed in the air, how they worked, etc.

We started our study by reading The Glorious Flight.  Then we went to the library to find some books on airplanes and the history of flight.  Clark and Luci sat on the floor in the library for the longest time, pouring over the books.  We weren’t really able to decide which ones to take home, so we took them all home and have been reading them together every since!  You can see why we take a lot longer than 5 days to row a book.  Just this subject alone could fill a week!

One of our favorite books from the library was a book about how to make paper airplanes.  It had dozens of different models and Clark wanted to try them all.  I thought it would be fun to have a paper airplane contest, so we got the whole family involved!

We each made a paper airplane – I helped Luci and guided Clark.  My husband, made his and was certain he was going to win.  So when we had finished making them, we took them outside and had a contest!

CLARK WON!

Luci does not like losing and makes it evident to all.  The funny part is that she can never stay mad for long and cheers up very quickly – especially at the thought of winning another contest!

We made some revisions and more paper airplanes and tried them again the next night.  This time LUCI WON!

It was lots of fun and I believe that incorporating some memories into our lessons, helps to reinforce what is being learned.
