30 Apr Let’s Make Some Felt Bluebonnets
There’s an odd ritual that happens every spring in Texas. One by one, families leave their homes. Some dress in jeans, cowboy boots and cowboy hats; others in their Sunday best. They gather in secret spots known sometimes to only a few. Often the secret leaks out and many show up. They are here to see the bluebonnets, the Texas state flower that blankets the fields and sideroads. But more than that, they are here to take the obligatory, yearly bluebonnet pictures. Pretty much every Texan has a picture of themselves in the bluebonnets.
Our family participates in this ritual too. Every year, it’s a challenge to find the best bluebonnet field.
Materials Needed:
- Felt (green for the leaves, white for the tips of the flowers, light and dark blue, light and dark pink, and any other combination you choose)
- A glue gun and glue
- Scissors
- Green Pipe Cleaners
This year however, much to our dismay, our entire family got sick the very week we had planned our bluebonnet excursion. I desperately hate missing a year. I have bluebonnet pictures of my children since year 1. But it’s not just the pictures, it’s the experience. It’s the absolute awe that you feel when witnessing nature at its’ best.
In true form, we decided to make some felt bluebonnets. What do they say? Fake it ’til you make it! So we made some fake bluebonnets.

My biggest challenge with this project was that horrific glue gun. I swear, each time I use it, I burn myself. If I try this project again, I may try sewing the felt onto the pipe cleaners to try to avoid the burns.
Thankfully, our bouquet turned out beautifully.
