The Best Way to Start a Ball of Yarn

You’d think it would be obvious which is the best way to start a ball of yarn. You’d think it would be very clear which end to start with, right? There is an end that is always very clearly on the outside of a skein of yarn, and one would normally think that this end would be the one to start with – simply because it’s obvious. When I started with crochet, this is the end I always started with, not knowing any different or any better. The problem was that as you use this end, as the ball unwinds, it sends your ball of yarn twisting and bouncing every which way around the room. If you attempt to avoid this by securing the skein in a bag, it still requires a significant amount of effort to unwind it every few stitches.

Could there possibly be a better way to start a ball of yarn and avoid the ball flying around the room, and also the tangles and frustrations that come with that? There is!

Learning how to pull the end out from the middle of the ball of yarn makes all the difference! Watch the video below to learn how!

I’m sure this is not the only way to start a ball of yarn, but it’s what works for me. It’s always a fun challenge to see if I can snag the end when pulling out the yarn from the inside.
