19 Oct What You Need to Know Before Getting Started with Crochet
One thing I was sure of when we started our Happy Handicrafts video series, was that I would be covering crochet and sharing what you need to know before getting started with crochet. Not only do I have almost 40 years of experience with crochet, but it’s also a handicraft that I love. It has stood the test of time (clearly) and has been the source of much relaxation and joy throughout the years.
I initially learned to crochet as a child, but it became a hobby that I kept revisiting as a young adult. At the time, I was brand new nurse and was working in Labor and Delivery. I struck up a friendship with an older nurse who worked in the nursery. She was slightly older than my own mother and she took me under her wing. Not only did she teach me about being a nurse, but in our downtime, she showed me how to crochet. Together we’d make blankets, hats, and tiny outfits for babies in the nursery who needed them. As the years past, I used this knowledge to make crocheted items for my own children.
As my experience grew, along with my confidence, so did my crochet projects. I began selling my patterns and giving my projects away as gifts. Some of my favorites to give were baby clothing and accessories, stuffed animals, and blankets.
I also used my skills to create things for my own family and home. One year I got it into my head that I wanted some Christmas items that would be of value for my children in the years to come. So I made us all Christmas stockings and a Christmas tree skirt. What I love about these, is that I would never be able to find them in a store, and that they are of incredibly high quality and value.
