14 Mar Here’s to a Happy Pi{e} Day!
We have just started to read Harold and the Purple Crayon as part of our Five in a Row curriculum. I love to start our new studies off with a celebratory bang! Clark and Luci actually had the idea of having a picnic of just pies, just like Harold did in the story. It ended up raining on our picnic day, but that didn’t stop us from making tons of pies for dinner! What better way to have a happy Pi{e} Day?!
Happy Pi{e} Day!
Best part? The date is March 14th – 3.14! Pi{e} Day! Gotta love a great coincidence!
As usual, I think these kids came up with idea of pies simply so that they can devour the filling. And I feel like I need to add a note here, saying I don’t normally allow my children to stick their fingers in food and act like hoodlums, but when we’re doing FIAR activities, I allow them to explore a little further than I would normally.
We made a blueberry pie (one of Daddy’s favorites and pretty close to purple!) Luci had the idea to cut the shape of a purple crayon in the middle, to go along with the Harold and the Purple Crayon theme.
Then we made strawberry and chocolate pies (tarts, but I’m not getting technical). Clark and Luci helped roll the dough and fit it into the pans. Then once they were cooked, they took turns, scooping the filling into the shells.
Seriously. There’s only one reason why these kids want to “help” me bake.
Daddy started a new job today, so it was fun to wait for him to get home and surprise him with our silly all-pie dinner for Pi{e} Day!
Happy Pi{e} Day everyone! This was a great way to kick off our new book study of Harold and the Purple Crayon! It’s going to be a fun row!
