We have been reading Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, as part of our Five in a Row (FIAR) curriculum. This is a classic children’s book, written in 1939. It is about a man who takes his well-loved steam shovel, Mary Anne, on an adventure to show that they are just as good – or better than all of the new gas, electric and diesel shovels. As the weather slowly turned cool, ushering in fall, our next Five in a Row adventure seemed an obvious one: How to Make an Apple Pie and see the World. After taking some time off from Five in a Row, we are back, studying The Glorious Flight by Alice and Martin Provensen.  I chose this book because Clark has been asking some very specific questions recently about airplanes and how they fly.  So I thought this would provide a great opportunity to take him in the direction of his interest.
