Welcome to the Essential Oils of Ancient Scripture Class! This class will introduce you to a fascinating side of essential oils that you may have never thought about before. If you have not yet read through the Introduction to Essential Oils class, I do recommend that you do that first. It will give you a solid foundation in understanding essential oils and their benefits to our bodies.
This is a quick overview of what we will be covering in this class:
The information shared in this class is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any illness, nor is it meant to replace professional medical attention or advice. This class is in reference to Young Living Essential Oils ONLY. These are the only oils that we use and recommend because of their purity, quality, safety and effectiveness.
I would also like to say that this class is not to debate religious and spiritual opinions, interpretations and differences. The purpose of this class is to study the Bible and scriptural references that show how essential oils were used in history, as well as allowing you to experience these essential oils for yourself.
What are Essential Oils? Essential oils are very concentrated, very potent, volatile liquids produced by trees, herbs, plants and flowers. They are called essential oils because they are essential to the life and well-being of the plant. They also benefit us as well. Essential oils are adaptogenic, meaning they respond to what the body needs and can create different responses in each person. They are fat-soluble, so they can cross into the skin and even into the blood-brain barrier, which can actually affect our brain and stress levels.
Plants actually make two types of oils: essential oils and fatty oils. The difference between essential oils and fatty oils is that essential oils circulate within the plant and are protective for the adult plant. Fatty oils do not circulate and are present to protect the seed. Essential oils can cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the blood stream. Fatty oils do not. They are too big to pass through our skin. Fatty oils are not aromatic, for example, you do not smell Olive oil from across the room when it is opened. We use fatty oils along with our essential oils to dilute the oil if needed.
Why do we chose to use Young Living Essential Oils ONLY? Why don’t we just buy them off the shelf at the store? Grocery stores and health food stores do not sell pure essential oils, despite what is labeled on the package. These oils are typically distilled with solvents and other chemicals, then diluted to sell. Potency and safety matters with essential oils. Only therapeutic grade essential oils can be used to support the body and can be used internally.
Young Living has a long-standing tradition of excellence and has been producing essential oils for over 20 years. They are the world standard in quality, with the highest quality control. This is known as the Seed to Seal promise.
The Seed to Seal Promise is comprised of 5 steps in the production of an essential oil.
Essential Oils have been used throughout history. They are not a new, trendy fad that has popped up in recent years. In fact, essential oils were used long before Christ, by the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, the Chinese, and the Romans. They have been used historically to maintain health, to detox the body, for healthy and younger-looking skin, for mental and emotional relaxation, for spiritual cleansing and much more.
When I teach this class in person, we take the opportunity to sample and experience all of the different oils. When doing this, you want to be sure that it is done in a safe manner. It is important to know that essential oils always create cellular change and may have a detoxifying effect, depending on your body chemistry. To help your body flush out any toxins, be sure to drink plenty of water while sampling the oils! If you get a light headache or feel dizzy, take a break. When sampling, do not turn the bottle upside down and shake it. Do not touch the orifice reducer. Just wait patiently for a drop to come out. Some essential oils are thicker than others and may take a longer time to drip out. Allow one drop to fall into your hand, rub your hands together in a clock-wise direction, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale deeply.
Be careful not to get essential oils in your eyes or ears. If you do, or if you experience some heat or irritation, apply a carrier oil until the feeling is gone.
Essential Oils are found throughout Scripture. In fact, in the Bible there are over 600 references to essential oils and the aromatic plants from which they were extracted. The fact is, in biblical times, essential oils were used on a daily basis. You may notice that although the Bible mentions the oils, it rarely discusses their usage in detail. This is probably because they were so common. It could be compared to a novel written today, mentioning coffee or Tylenol. We don’t necessarily describe how it is prepared and sourced, simply because it is so common, we assume everyone already knows.
Read Proverbs 21:20
“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
In Exodus, there is actually a specific essential oils blend recipe given by God called the Holy Anointing Oil. God specifies the exact amounts of each essential oil and even the carrier oil. If we break this down into modern day measurements, it would make 6 gallons of oil. It would be about 84% essential oils and 16% olive oil. Why would they need so much? Because God had them anoint EVERYHTING! They didn’t just use a little drop here and a little drop there. They anointed EVERYTHING, EVERY DAY! Animals were sacrificed here, which could create a very pathological environment, but there is no recording of epidemics. These oils were sanitizing. Essential oils were more than ceremonial – they were for the protection of the people.
Read Exodus 30:22-38
“22 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. 26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, 27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, 28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. 29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office. 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. 32 Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. 33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people. 34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: 35 And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: 36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy. 37 And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the Lord. 38 Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.”
One of my favorite stories about the Holy Anointing Oil is in Numbers 16:46-56.
“46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun. 47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.”
Aaron puts on the Holy incense and stands between the sick and healthy during the plague and prevents more from dying. If you have the Young Living essential oil Exodus II, take a moment to inhale it deeply. This oil contains all four of the Holy Anointing Oil, along with four other oils.
What exactly is “Anointing”? Anointing is mentioned 156 times in the Bible, so it is important that we understand what it is. This is described in Exodus 29:7 and James 5:14.
“Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.”
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
Anointing is taking an oil and pouring over the top of a person’s head, setting them apart. If you look anointing up in a biblical dictionary, it will actually say massage or rubbing. In Hebrew the word is very similar to “massage”.
Psalms 133:2 describes to us the actual amount of oils used. It was running off their beards, running off their garments and onto the ground. They used a lot of oil – they were using buckets – and it was VERY expensive! They didn’t have alternatives like the pharmaceuticals that we have today, so essential oils were are really BIG deal! They anointed EVERYTHING. God said if you anoint it, it makes it holy as I am holy.
“It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments.”
Nowadays we are so careful and frugal with our oils. We are so worried about “using too much.” The skeptics warn of their dangers, but in Biblical times, these same oils were literally poured onto people’s heads. This gives us a little perspective, doesn’t it?
For those of us who use essential oils, we are literally anointing our children, our spouses, our friends, ourselves. This is should not be minimized. It should be intentional and prayerful. When you put your oils on others, you are anointing them.
The chemistry of Essential Oils is absolutely fascinating. Did you know that one drop of an essential oil contains 40 million trillion molecules? Since we have approximately 100 trillion cells in our bodies, one drop of an essential oil can cover every cell in our body with 40,000 molecules. How amazing is that?
Each essential oils contains different constituents that affect the cells of our bodies in different ways.
We each have a genotype. For example, you are genetically either a man or a woman and you cannot change those genetics. You may be genetically programmed to have brown hair – you are not going to take an essential oil and wake up as a blond the next morning. That is your genotype. Your phenotype is how you exhibit your genetic code. This is based on your environment. For example, no one is genetically programmed to have diabetes, but you may be genetically predisposed with a weakness in certain areas, your digestive tract is slower and your pancreas is weak. When you put yourself in a certain environment you will then exhibit certain symptoms.
Young Living has created a kit called the Oils of Ancient Scripture. This kit contains 10 of the most popular oils mentioned in the Bible. As you read through this class, or as you teach this class to others, I encourage you to open your Oils of Ancient Scripture Kit and experience each oil as you discuss it. Pass them around the room and encourage everyone to smell them.
The first of these oils is Aloes or Sandalwood essential oil. Aloes is mentioned several times throughout the Bible.
Read Numbers 24:6
“As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.”
Read Psalms 45:8
“All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.”
Read Proverbs 7:17
“I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.”
Read Song of Solomon 4:13-14
“13 Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, 14 Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices.”
John 19:38-39 talks about the blend of essential oils used for the burial of Jesus, which would be worth about $150,000-$200,000 today! This shows their respect and honor for Jesus and also that they were extremely rich!
“38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.”
Aloes or Sandalwood has traditionally been used as incense in religious ceremonies and for meditation. It is very uplifting and relaxing and stimulates the brain to produce melatonin to help you sleep. It has also been used for centuries for its’ skin revitalization properties.
Cassia essential oil is in the same family of plants as Cinnamon. It smells like Cinnamon, just much stronger.
Read Exodus 30:24
“22 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.”
Read Ezekiel 27:19
“Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market.”
Read Psalms 45:8
“All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.”
This oil has been used to support the body’s natural defenses – our immune system. It also supports proper circulation and maintenance of a normal blood sugar. I would not put this in your mouth because I’ve read of it being used as a local anesthetic – meaning if you swallow some, it could possibly paralyze your larynx and you won’t be able to talk for about 20 minutes.
Cedarwood is possibly one of the first oils to be distilled.
“All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.”Read Leviticus 14:1-7
“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: 3 And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper; 4 Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: 5 And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water: 6 As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water: 7 And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field.”
This is the cleansing recipe for leprosy using Cedarwood and Hyssop. In verse 14 they even talk about reflexology points.
14 “And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.”
In reflexology, the right ear is related to resolving issues with parents, the thumb and toe are trigger points for clearing unknown fears and mental blocks for learning, and the right big toe is a point for clearing addictions and compulsive behavior.
In Leviticus, we can read how Cedarwood, along with other essential oils were used for cleansing.
Read Leviticus 14:49-57
“49 And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: 50 And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water: 51 And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times: 52 And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet: 53 But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean. 54 This is the law for all manner of plague of leprosy, and scall, 55 And for the leprosy of a garment, and of a house, 56 And for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot: 57 To teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean: this is the law of leprosy.”
Again, in Numbers, a very similar cleansing procedure, this time using a heifer.
Read Numbers 19:6
“And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.”
Cedarwood was used by Egyptians and Sumerians for 5000 years for embalming ritual purposes, as well as all kinds of cleansing and purifying uses. Do you happen to have a cedar chest? This type of wood is used specifically to keep the moths away, it also works to energize the brain, so use it to study for a test, then use it during the test to help memory recall. Cedarwood is the oil with the highest sesquiterpine content, and its powerful scent creates a relaxing, calming and comforting environment. It is found in such Young Living blends as Brain Power, Grounding and Highest Potential.
Cypress is rich in monoterpenes. It’s scent is refreshing and restores feelings of security and stability. It is known historically to be beneficial for oily skin and it supports the cardiovascular system. It can be very grounding and supportive of the emotions, and supports the body’s natural defenses.
Read Genesis 6:14
“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.”
The translation of the word gopher from Hebrew is uncertain but is theorized to be Cypress. If this is the case, Noah’s ark was make our of Cypress wood.
Read Isaiah 44:14
“He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.”
Read Isaiah 41:19
“I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together.”
Read I Kings 9:11
“Now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire, that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.”
Read Song of Solomon 1:17
“The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.”
It is found in the Young Living essential oil blends Aroma Seiz, Aroma Life and R.C.
Frankincense is one of the four chosen oils for the Holy Anointing oil.
Read Exodus 30:34-36
“34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: 35 And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: 36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.”
Read I Chronicles 9:29
“Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.”
Read Nehemiah 13:5
“And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.”
Of course, Frankincense is best known for being a gift to the Christ child at birth.
Read Matthew 2:11
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.”
Why would the wise men give Frankincense and Myrrh? Frankincense was known to help support healthy skin and revitalization (Mary had just had a baby!). It is also very spiritually uplifting, increases inner strength, inspires balanced emotions and lifts the mood. Myrrh was known to be very beneficial for mother-baby bonding.
Hyssop was used during the first Passover to help to protect the people from all of the death that was coming.
Read Exodus 12:22
“And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.”
Hyssop was also used in the story of King David and Bathsheba. King David saw Bathsheba bathing and decided he wanted her, so he had her husband killed and then married her. Through it all, King David never acknowledged his sin until the prophet came to him. When presented with his sin, he actually seemed shocked, but was fully repentant and asked God for spiritual cleansing and purifying using Hyssop.
Read Psalms 51:3-7
“3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
Historically Hyssop was thought to be spiritually purifying and was used in cleansing oneself from sin, evil thoughts and bad habits. This actually has some scientific basis – Hyssop contains 50% ketones (which act like Phenols and cleanse receptor sites), 5-10% sesquiterpines (which have been shown to delete addictions and compulsive behavior), and 20-30% monoterpenes which reprogram DNA and can restore normal function.
Read Psalms 51:10
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Hyssop is also known to be helpful in meditation, to support the respiratory system, and is emotionally balancing. It is found in such Young Living essential oil blends as blends as White Angelica, Awaken, Harmony, Exodus II, Relieve It, and Immupower.
Myrrh is the first and most frequently mentioned oil in the Bible. In Genesis 37 we can read the story of Joseph and his brothers. His older brothers hated him and decided to kill him, but instead at the last minute they changed their minds and threw him into a pit.
Read Genesis 37:25
“And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.”
The brothers sold Joseph to the traders who then sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Ironically when a famine came to their land and the brothers had to go to buy food from Pharaoh, they took Myrrh as a present.
Read Genesis 43:11
“And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.”
Myrrh was given along with Frankincense to Mary and Joseph at the birth of Jesus.
Read Matthew 2:11
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.”
In Esther, we read how Esther had a year-long purification process to undergo in order to marry the King. Much of this involved essential oils.
Read Esther 2:12
“Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors, and with other things for the purifying of the women.”
Myrrh was known to be very emotionally balancing, giving feelings of security and peace, especially to pregnant and new mothers. It supports healthy skin and was often applied to the umbilical cord of a new baby to provide protection. It is one of the most versatile oils, being very purifying, restorative, revitalizing and uplifting.
Myrtle was part of Esther’s perfume or essential oil blend for the year of preparation to become wife of the King. Research has found Myrtle to be effective in normalizing hormones and balancing thyroid, hypothyroid and ovaries. It is also very soothing to respiratory system, the skin and the hair. Myrtle can be found in the Young Living essential oil blends Endoflex, Purification, and R.C.
We can read in Esther 2:7 that Esther’s name was changed to the Hebrew name, Hadassah. Hadassah is Hebrew for Myrtle.
“And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.”
Onycha is another essential oil used in the Holy Anointing Oil.
Read Exodus 30:34
“And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight.”
Onycha contains vanillin aldehyde, so it smells somewhat like vanilla. It is one of the heaviest of the oils and usually requires a toothpick to get it out. Onycha has been valued historically for its’ ability to support the skin and immune system. Today it is often used for kidney support, to support normal digestion, to maintain normal blood sugars and to soothe the skin.
Rose of Sharon is also known as Cistus Ladanifer, Rock Rose, Cistus, Ladanum and Labdanum. Shepherds used the gum of the rock rose to rub into the skin of their goats or sheep to help support their integumentary system. It is helpful when used for musculo-skeletal and circulatory support, and for supporting proper immune function. It is an ingredient in Immupower.
I hope, you’ve enjoyed this look into the essential oils of ancient scripture. I find the history fascinating, but this isn’t just about history. You have now been given knowledge to spread to others.
Read Mark 6:12-13
“12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.”
It’s time to get to work! Start using the oils and blends. Now that you know the Biblical basis for many of these essential oils, go and anoint your family, your friends, and yourself! Experience the benefits that those in the Bible experienced! We have been given a gift – let’s use it!
