Five in a Row

Some Five in a Row books are a big hit with my children, and some are not. As much as I wanted it to be loved, I realized right away that Storm in the Night, that it was not going to be a hit.  There was very little action. My children described it as "a lot of boring talking."  Clark and Luci are, however, definitively interested in thunderstorms and weather, so we didn't want to miss the subject matter. I decided instead to focus this row on the book, Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco, which we had gotten from the library as an add-on.  We've...

I had had plans to start rowing with FIAR, Volume 1, but as this week approached, I kept thinking of this book.  I fondly remembered it from my childhood.  My father used to read us Beatrix Potter's books as bedtime stories.  Being as there are little rabbits running around our yard right now, and since it is gardening season here, I decided to go straight tol Volume 2 and start by rowing The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Book Review The Tale of Peter Rabbit is the time-honored story of a mischievous rabbit who's entire goal in life was to get into Mr. McGregor's garden....

We have started rowing The Tale of Peter Rabbit this week (and probably the next), so I wanted to do some gardening with Clark and Luci.  The incredible irony of this is that I. CANNOT. GROW. ANYTHING.  In fact, I'm really amazed that my children are growing so well!  At one point, I wanted a plant so bad that I bought a cactus. Would you believe I actually killed that too?! So this gardening endeavor was a big one for all of us!  The one thing that gives me courage is my Fairy Garden (you've got to check...

Today we are finishing up our Five in a Row study of Night of the Moonjellies with a focus on jellyfish.  Much of the information suggested in the Five in a Row workbook was above Clark and Luci’s heads, so we kept it simple.  I would like to return to some subjects later on, when there is time and interest, such as the concept of owning a small business. How to Create a Simple Aquatic Biome Since the children’s focus was definitively on jellyfish and other aquatic animals, I decided to pursue this subject with them and create a simple aquatic biome out of...

Clark and Luci both went to Mother's Day Out today.  That gives me a few hours to catch up on sleep, clean and get organized. I had promised them some Goldfish crackers as an after-school snack, but I was actually planning on getting some Five in a Row math done at the same time!  Today we did our activities first and read our book, Night of the Moonjellies last. First, Clark and Luci had some leftover candies that they had to feed to their little puppy and bunny. Math Luci’s first math activity was to sort out the correct number of goldfish...
