Holidays

Ever since we first discovered them, Clark and Luci have loooooved peg dolls. The only way I know to explain the obsession is to equate them to those old Fischer Price characters from the 1970s. I know – I’m dating myself. But do you remember them? They really were, in essence, peg dolls – they had no arms, no legs and I’m not sure that I ever even noticed! I loved them! I remember playing with them for hours. Well now, you can not only make your own peg dolls, but you can make your own peg doll nativity set! The Children Wanted...

Don’t you just love the Christmas Season? I grew up in a home that did the holidays right, so I have some great memories of my childhood Christmases. We never had a lot of money, but I never knew it around the holidays! My father would make a big production about getting a real tree – fake was out of the question. Then came the day-long struggle with the string of lights that had to be untangled and hung before the rest of the tree could be touched. As the children decorated the tree with our hideous school-made decorations and tinsel,...

“Mommy when are we going to get a pumpkin to carve?” We are walking through the grocery store, past the massive display of pumpkins and the inevitable question comes.  Clark had been hounding me for weeks and I had put it off as long as I was able.  I was going to have to carve a pumpkin.  Now, I know that there are some folks who love this sort of thing (and to those people, I say: “Where on earth are you when I need you?!”), but I’m not one of them. In fact, there are few things in life that...

My baby girl, Luci is turning 4 years old!  It’s my baby’s birthday and I’m making this about me. I have never been one of those Moms who falls to pieces with every milestone.  If that’s you, don’t take offense, it’s probably just my own personal defense mechanism so that I don’t have a public breakdown because of all the things that I miss as a working Mom.  For real.  But in the meantime, as other Moms were wiping their tears as they dropped their babies off at Preschool, I was high-tailing it home so I could get an awesome nap...

Do you struggle with balance?  Balance in your life, balance in your relationships, balance in your health and fitness?  How about in your career?  Your finances?  Your faith?  Even your time off? I struggle with this.  Maybe it is because of my personality…  I tend to be all or nothing in many areas of my life.  Black or white.  Hot or cold.  Yes or no.  It is  very easy for me to get distracted from all areas of my life when one area catches my attention.  Kind of like the dog from the movie “Up.” SQUIRREL! When I get excited about something, it tends to become my entire...

I’ve always made some sort of elaborate Gingerbread House for the Holidays, but as it often does, practicality takes precedence over aesthetics when you have young children.  So this year, I showed the kids how to make a super-easy “gingerbread” house, and they had a ball. Swap out the Gingerbread for Graham Crackers Instead of Gingerbread, we used the much simpler Graham Crackers.  My Mom (who raised 15 kids) always said kids don’t really like the taste of real Gingerbread anyways.  But I can tell you, they sure do like Graham Crackers!  This little house is made out of 4 of the slabs from...
