Homeschool

I clearly remember, over 30 years ago, sitting in my elementary class, listening to the teacher read the book, Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling. Her enthusiasm for the story was directly conveyed to us, her students, as we listen enraptured by the story of small canoe carved by an young boy, drifting through the Great Lakes out to the Atlantic Ocean. Imagine my excitement when I found this very book on the list of reading material for my children’s homeschool curriculum this year! I couldn’t wait to start our Paddle-to-the-Sea unit study! Our “unit studies” are perhaps a little different than others. My purpose with a unit study is...

I am not the sort of person who ever feels the need to defend her decisions. I am confident enough in my choices, that an explanation to a stranger just seems weird and irrelevant. Today, however,  as I stood in line at the local Chick-Fil-A, I unexpectedly found myself in a position where I felt I needed to defend our decision to homeschool. Up until that moment, I had never been publicly challenged or even questioned about our choice to homeschool. It had honestly never occurred to me that a stranger could possibly be so rude, so needless to say, I was...

I am really excited to be guest-posting on a regular basis on one of my favorite blogs, My Joy-Filled Life. Today, my article, “Studying the Masters of Classic Art: Vincent Van Gogh” will be featured and you’re going to want to read it. This is such a fun and SIMPLE way (I’m all about quick and easy!) to learn about famous artists. The best news is the curriculum is FREE for the summer!!! Be sure to read the article to find out how you can get the curriculum and have fun with your kiddos! My children absolutely loved it, so we will be...

We have been fascinated for the past several weeks as we’ve watched a very special bald eagle family from Hanover, Pennsylvania, build their nest in preparation for their new family. This is our second year, witnessing the birth of a new bald eagle family and we are in love! Catch the Live Feed The Pennsylvania Game Commission has partnered with HDonTap to provide us with a live feed so that we can enjoy watching the eagles’ activities day and night, using night vision! I can’t think of a better way to get the children engaged and learning about the habits of these awesome birds than by watching them...

We’ve been learning about dinosaurs for the past couple of weeks. We went on a field trip to visit a local nature preserve that had a display of animatronic, life-sized dinosaurs, which needless to say completely captivated the imagination of my children and we’ve been discussing these animals ever since! How cool are these? I mean, I was kind of fascinated, too! These dinosaurs moved, glared at you, roared, and even sprayed venom (maybe it was just water, but the kids were pretty sure it was poisonous) at us. We even had the opportunity to climb on them and check out their teeth! How...

We have been reading Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, as part of our Five in a Row (FIAR) curriculum. This is a classic children’s book, written in 1939. It is about a man who takes his well-loved steam shovel, Mary Anne, on an adventure to show that they are just as good – or better than all of the new gas, electric and diesel shovels. Of course, we read the book several times, but Clark and Luci enjoyed watching the movie for one of the days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZtXtbZn5f0 Community Helpers and Transportation The story of Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel includes a lot of community helpers. Many of...
