Homeschool

I'm not too into flash cards, but on a little trip to the Dollar Store yesterday, Luci saw some labeled with "ABC" and got so excited about recognizing the letters that we couldn't resist buying them for her.  I also worry that sometimes I get so focused on Clark's education that she feels left out in the process. This time I got Clark involved and had him show her the cards, while she named the letter and sound.  If she wasn't sure, Clark would help her out.  It was adorable.  Clark got bored quickly, but it was a great interaction.  I...

I just have to say:  “I love my new laminator!!!”  I've been asking other Moms and bloggers for their favorite laminator and everyone's choice, hands down, was the Scotch brand Thermal Laminator. It so happens that it was 50% off this week!  So awesome!  So I scurried over to Amazon to buy it, knowing that if I was going to homeschool, I would use it a lot.  Now, I am finally getting the opportunity to use it! For my first laminator-project, I created a game I call “Bat-a-Bug,” similar to the old-fashioned carnival game of Bat-a-Rat.  It’s spring and Clark...

Oh the things you discover…!  As I’ve been researching homeschooling, I keep coming back to the English educator, Charlotte Mason from the late 1800s and her methods.  Her approach to education rings so true and I strongly believe that it would be extremely effective for my children.  One thing Charlotte Mason stresses is the importance of outdoor nature study with children.  In fact, she suggests 4-6 hours of this every day!  Although this may be too lofty of a goal, several hours once a week for nature study may be more attainable. Find a Local Nature Preserve Since today is Friday and I work all weekend, I wanted to get the...

Today we are finishing up our Five in a Row study of Night of the Moonjellies with a focus on jellyfish.  Much of the information suggested in the Five in a Row workbook was above Clark and Luci’s heads, so we kept it simple.  I would like to return to some subjects later on, when there is time and interest, such as the concept of owning a small business. How to Create a Simple Aquatic Biome Since the children’s focus was definitively on jellyfish and other aquatic animals, I decided to pursue this subject with them and create a simple aquatic biome out of...

Clark and Luci both went to Mother's Day Out today.  That gives me a few hours to catch up on sleep, clean and get organized. I had promised them some Goldfish crackers as an after-school snack, but I was actually planning on getting some Five in a Row math done at the same time!  Today we did our activities first and read our book, Night of the Moonjellies last. First, Clark and Luci had some leftover candies that they had to feed to their little puppy and bunny. Math Luci’s first math activity was to sort out the correct number of goldfish...
