Homeschool

Mondays are a killer for me.  I work full-time nights. That's 12 hours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Then I come home on Monday and try to manage my young children until my husband comes home from work. He will then take over so that I can sleep. Somehow I have to stay awake and functional until he gets home. So far, this is the only way we've figured out how to manage working full time and young children. A couple of years ago, we had an incident that convinced us that we did...

What greater way to finish up our study of jellyfish than a trip to the aquarium?!  We teamed up with a local homeschool group for a nice discount to visit an aquarium downtown. I had been hesitant to visit it because the price was a little crazy, but the homeschool group got an amazing deal and there was no way we were going to turn that down!   Aquarium Scavenger Hunt Before we went, I thought I'd get Clark and Luci a little more engaged by making up a little scavenger hunt for them.  You can download them HERE if...

I'm not too into flash cards, but on a little trip to the Dollar Store yesterday, Luci saw some labeled with "ABC" and got so excited about recognizing the letters that we couldn't resist buying them for her.  I also worry that sometimes I get so focused on Clark's education that she feels left out in the process. This time I got Clark involved and had him show her the cards, while she named the letter and sound.  If she wasn't sure, Clark would help her out.  It was adorable.  Clark got bored quickly, but it was a great interaction.  I...

It so happens that it was 50% off this week!  So awesome!  So I scurried over to Amazon to buy it, knowing that if I was going to homeschool, I would use it a lot.  Now, I am finally getting the opportunity to use it! For my first laminator-project, I created a game I call “Bat-a-Bug,” similar to the old-fashioned carnival game of Bat-a-Rat.  It’s spring and Clark...

Oh the things you discover…!  As I’ve been researching homeschooling, I keep coming back to the English educator, Charlotte Mason from the late 1800s and her methods.  Her approach to education rings so true and I strongly believe that it would be extremely effective for my children.  One thing Charlotte Mason stresses is the importance of outdoor nature study with children.  In fact, she suggests 4-6 hours of this every day!  Although this may be too lofty of a goal, several hours once a week for nature study may be more attainable. Find a Local Nature Preserve Since today is Friday and I work all weekend, I wanted to get the...
