Our Best Life

I did mention that we would be spending a lot of time outdoors, didn’t I?  Well, it’s January and it’s 75° out, so we are outside! The weather has been unbelievable this week and we have been taking full advantage of it! Yesterday we spent the entire afternoon with our Co-op group at the park. We joined a Homeschooling Co-op back in September and have not been very active in it, despite the best of intentions.  We’re trying to get more involved. Clark and Luci were hesitant at first, but eventually met some new friends to play with and had...

We have been very busy cramming in some park time, spending as much time outdoors as we can!  We’re very fortunate that we still have nice enough weather in our part of the country to be playing outside, but I don’t expect this to last long.  We often have a week of warm weather in January, which is just enough to cause us shock when the cold February, rainy season arrives.  Then we’re back indoors again, dreaming of warmer weather. We packed some snacks and went for a hike at a our favorite local nature preserve.  Clark and Luci were “too tired...

I’ve always made some sort of elaborate Gingerbread House for the Holidays, but as it often does, practicality takes precedence over aesthetics when you have young children.  So this year, I showed the kids how to make a super-easy “gingerbread” house, and they had a ball. Swap out the Gingerbread for Graham Crackers Instead of Gingerbread, we used the much simpler Graham Crackers.  My Mom (who raised 15 kids) always said kids don’t really like the taste of real Gingerbread anyways.  But I can tell you, they sure do like Graham Crackers!  This little house is made out of 4 of the slabs from...

Every year I take pictures of my children for Christmas Cards.  I have this elusive fantasy of one day being super-organized and getting all of the pictures framed and lined up on the wall, documenting my babies’ growth through the years.  I am realistic enough to know that this may never happen.  Truth be told, I am lucky to get Christmas cards mailed out! In fact, I always include “Happy New Year,” just in case they are too late for Christmas. Do you send out Christmas Cards every year? For some reason the thought of Christmas cards did not even...

The morning after I officially pulled Luci out of her Mother’s Day Out program, she burst into our bedroom at 6 am, all excited, squealing:  “Am I going to school today, Mommy?  I need to get ready!”  My stomach just lurched and the second-guessing started.  All day I questioned my decision. Was this a selfish decision?  Is this in Luci’s best interest?  I struggled for several days with these thoughts until I took a moment to snatch some pictures of Clark and Luci playing together outside.  They were have a great time bouncing on balls, squealing and laughing, falling...

I had a defining moment several weeks ago. After working a night shift, I was taking a nap and my husband was watching the kiddos. While cleaning the bathroom, he got a phone call and went to answer it. While he was on the phone, our sweet, sweet 5 yr old son decided to help him clean the bathroom. He took our (what I now know to be toxic) spray cleaner and covered every surface of the bathroom, including his eyes and face. Knowing he had done something he should not have done, he ran and hid. When I woke...
