08 Mar How to Create a Bouquet of Coffee Filter Shamrocks
Ever notice that there are flower bouquets for every season and reason, but not really for St. Patrick’s Day? In fact, the stores where I live completely skip over this little holiday and have right on to Easter. To rectify this injustice, we have decided to make our own bouquet of shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day with coffee filters. I guarantee they’ll last longer than your typical bouquet as well!
Things you will need:
- Coffee Filters
- Pencil
- Green Pipe Cleaners
- Green Food Dye
- Paper Towels
You can make as many shamrocks as you like – the more the merrier! Start by taking each coffee filter and dividing it into thirds with a small pencil mark. Bring the pencil marks into the center of the coffee filter, as seen below. Squeeze it tight, don’t worry about how it looks at this point.
Wrap a green pipe cleaner around the center to keep the shape of the three leaves. You can fluff up with shamrock pedals a little at this point but don’t aim for perfection yet! Kids will be great at this!
Next fill a large bowl with water. This can also be done in the sink. Dip a shamrock into the water, fully submerging it. Then lift it out slowly, allowing most of the water to drip off. Then drip a few drops of green food coloring onto each petal. Ours was not quite as green as I would have liked. It was more neon green, but we made do.
Lay them flat on a paper towel to dry. It may take a few hours. Finally, arrange your St. Patrick’s Day coffee filter shamrocks in a vase for display. We filled our vase with crinkle cut paper. You could also use colored pompoms, colored stones or any other decorative filler that will hold your shamrocks in place. We’ve display ours on our kitchen table. It’s surprisingly bright and cheery!
