27 Sep How to Create a Paper Sloyd Fan
I hope that you’ve been following our paper sloyd series. My children and I have been working through the book Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. We are making videos of each project and posting them here and on YouTube under the name Happy Handicrafts. This week, for Project #10, we learned how to create a paper sloyd fan.
We initially thought that this project would be quite simple, but it proved to be the most challenging yet. Although the instructions and diagram were not difficult, we found that accuracy and attention to detail were very important. These skills (along with several others) are exactly what sloyd is intended to develop, so this is a great project to do!
Materials That You Will Need
As usual, the materials needed for this paper sloyd project are very simple and are probably found around your home. They are:
- Paper (with one side at least 12″ long)
- Hole punch
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Glue
- Yarn or Ribbon
Once you’ve gathered the equipment, you should be able to set your students up with the video and let them complete the project independently. These videos are created specifically for Homeschool Moms – and especially for those who aren’t “crafty” – to be able to set their children up, and let us do the rest. We’re crafty, so you don’t have to be!
This project, more than any of the previous ones, demanded we take the time to be accurate. Nobody wants a janky, crooked fan! Our first attempt was not pretty, but it taught us a valuable lesson. For best results, always put in your best effort!
