How to Create a Paper Sloyd Penwiper

We are nearing the end of our projects from the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades. We’ve been working on this for YEARS, and we’ve learned so much! Today’s project is the 10th of the supplementary models in the back of the book, a paper sloyd penwiper.

A penwiper? We had to laugh at this one. It may seem somewhat obvious what a penwiper is, but we went searching, just to be sure. We found out that it was an essential writing tool, used primarily in the 1800s, to wipe ink from a quill or pen nib. Penwipers are made in all shapes, sizes and in various materials as well. Some were wooden, others were made from wool – ours is made from paper.

Although we no long have use for a paper sloyd penwiper, we found that this model could definitively be put to use in other ways, such as a calendar or paper pad.

I’ve been consistently so surprised at these supplementary models. I keep expecting them to be a massive challenge – in the back of my mind I am considering quitting. But each time, we’ve manage to power through and figure out. Most of the time, the model hasn’t been nearly as hard as I expected. My children are most often the ones figuring things out, I might add.

How did yours turn out? How are you going to use it?

As for Grandma Parsnip – did you watch the Happy Handicrafts video to see her antics at the end? She’s going to be the death of me.

We have specifically made our videos to serve the Homeschool Mom. As a Homeschooling Mom of teenagers, I know how valuable time is. I also know, only too well, that I can’t do everything. Sometimes we need to allow our village to help us – and that’s what we want to do for you. If you’re struggling with getting handicrafts done, we’ve created a video channel so that all you will need to do is open it and push PLAY. Then sit down, craft with your kids, or indulge in a cup of coffee while we walk them through the day’s project.

Come craft with us! We’re crafty so you don’t have to be!
