How to Create a Round Button Box

How to Create a Paper Sloyd Round Button Box

Our project this week is a paper sloyd round button box. I can picture this cute little box being used in days gone by for tiny buttons or other sewing notions. This is the second supplementary model at the end of the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich. It reminded us of the 16th model from the 3rd year, the match holder, only this model is a little more complicated, with a lid.

Yay! for instructions! As we mentioned in our previous post, it appears that several of these Supplementary Models do not have instructions. I imagine this is based on an assumption that they are so simple that we should be able to create the models with the limited measurements provided. But I’m here to tell you, we’re just not that brilliant, and these instruction-less models are giving us a run for our money! We don’t give up, though, and eventually we get things figured out. I hope you stick with us, as we work through these projects – it’s a great homeschool handicraft curriculum!

Materials Needed:

  • The book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich
  • A piece of good quality cardstock or construction paper, in this project, we are using a 12″ x 12″ piece of scrapbook paper
  • cutting mat
  • An Exacto knife
  • A compass – this is not the sort of compass that comes with your average high-school geometry set. It is much more solid and does not have measurements on it.
  • A pencil
  • ruler
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue

Happy Handicrafts Video: How to Create a Paper Sloyd Round Button Box

Did this project remind you of the Match Holder? It was interesting to me to see different aspects from different models come together in this little paper sloyd round button box. And although it took us a while to make it, it ended up being a rewarding and enjoyable project that actually has some use.

We filled ours with miniature buttons and other notions from our sewing box. It’s really a lovely way to store such things. I hope you enjoyed this project!

We share our handicraft projects with you, so that you, as homeschoolers, can be sure to incorporate them into your homeschool curriculum. Handicrafts are incredibly beneficial, but there are many families who leave this subject out of their homeschool because it can be overwhelming and even difficult, if you are not “crafty.”

This is where we step in – we aren’t sporty, or great in mathematics, but we are crafty. We are excited to share that strength with you! Start with A Practical Guide to Your First Year of Paper Sloyd. Then be sure to follow along on our YouTube channel, Happy Handicrafts and go from there. We’d love to craft with you!
