How to Create a Paper Sloyd Twine Holder

We have reached a big goal today! Today we will be making the model featured on the front of the book, Paper Sloyd for Primary Grades – a paper sloyd twine holder. When we first began paper sloyd, I remember looking at that diagram and thinking how complicated it was. In fact, I even hesitated to start because of the complexity of that image. I couldn’t imagine having the skills to complete it. Yet today, my children and I worked through it like we did all of the other projects. We often encounter a challenge, but as we work through each difficulty, our confidence and skill increases. This was an enlightening moment, when we saw with certainty how far we’ve come with paper sloyd.

Now, as we mentioned in the video, we don’t have a lot of use twine holders. I imagine this project would have been much more relevant in 1905 when the book was published. But today, we don’t have a lot of twine hanging around. My daughter suggested putting garlic in it and hanging it in our pantry. It’s been kind of a genius idea because even when in a bag, garlic skin tends to get all over the place. Now, our little basket hangs in the pantry and there are no little garlic skins anywhere but in the basket.

One little tip that I didn’t mention in the video is to twist each twine tie. This cleans up the final project and makes it a little easier to hang.
