06 Aug Rock Painting, a Beautiful Pairing of Nature and Creativity
There are many reasons that we may want to put little art projects aside. My most frequent excuses are “we’re too busy,” “we didn’t even finish our math lesson today,” and “I just cleaned the house – we’re not about to mess it up again.” It wasn’t until I firmly decided to do art no matter what, that I realize all of my excuses were simply that – excuses. Art doesn’t have to be time-consuming and messy, and it’s just as important as math. It can be as simple as rock painting, a beautiful pairing of nature and creativity.
We used the opportunity on a nature walk to find some smooth rocks. The size doesn’t really matter. If you can’t make it out to nature, you can find rocks to paint in the craft stores or even online.
What You Will Need
- Differently shaped rocks of all sizes.
- Acrylic paint
- Paint palettes or a styrofoam plate
- Different sized paint brushes
- Acrylic sealant or coating (optional)
There is no secret to this art project. Just get your kids set up and watch their imaginations work overtime! And don’t think you have to do this indoors. We painted ours indoors on a rainy day, but if it’s nice out, you can set them up outside, on the grass and not even worry about a mess.
Clark and Luci painted mushrooms, strawberries, the beach, flowers, a rabbit, emojis and more!
Once the paint has dried, you can choose if you’d like to coat the rocks in an acrylic sealant or not. The paint will last if you do, especially if you plan of putting the rocks outdoors. We personally did not use the sealant as it contains some pretty toxic chemicals that we try to avoid. You do you.
Share Your Work! Make People Smile!
The last part of our rock painting project was to return the rocks to where we found them. You can put them back into nature, in parks, along walkways, near the entrance to public buildings – anywhere that you think someone will spot them, and it will make them smile.
The more joy and sunshine you spread, the happier this world will be. And right now, we could all use a little extra happiness!
P.S. Did you get our free offer for Homeschool Artist Study of George Seurat?
It includes everything you’ll need for an entire term of studying art. Your kids will especially enjoy the art projects that we suggest. We’ve tried them all and they’re my kids’ favorites!
