After abandoning our design grid in our last lesson (and loving it!), for our brushwork lesson #18, we are returning to the grid. We are working through the book, Brushwork Elementary Brush-Forms by Marion Hudson, as part of our homeschool handicraft curriculum. Lesson #18 is a Lesson on Hares and Leaves. Now, I'm going to be honest - the hares may take a little imagination, and the leaves look a little more like lily pads, but again, this isn't about realism. Our goal is to practice and improve our brush forms, while enjoying the process. ...

We went a little "off grid" in our last lesson and enjoyed it immensely. So, this week, we took it even further and did not even draw out the design on grid paper. This week's brushwork lesson #17, from the book, Brushwork Elementary Brush-Forms by Marion Hudson, was a design on laburnum. It was basically four hanging branches of laburnum. There is no point to attempt to place each flower on the grid in a precise way, so we free-styled it and loved every minute of it! As we learned in Brushwork, Lesson #16, the laburnum is a small...

Our brushwork lesson this week was the most fun so far! We have finally dared to abandon our trusty grid and allowed ourselves to paint sprays of laburnum freely. It was liberating and maybe even a little exhilarating! We are working through the book, Brushwork Elementary Brush-Forms by Marion Hudson and today we are doing brushwork lesson #16, which is a lesson on laburnum. The laburnum is a small ornamental tree best known for its long, drooping clusters of bright yellow flowers that bloom in late spring. It is native to central and southern Europe and grows best...

We are already on brushwork, lesson #15, which is officially halfway through our homeschool brushwork series! We are working through the book, Brushwork Elementary Brush-Forms by Marion Hudson. Lesson #15 takes the previous lesson, a lesson on the violet, and using the skills we learned, guides us through a design of the violet. Using the brushforms to paint violets, leaves, and vines, we are able to create a beautiful, circular design. Redrawing the Design on Our Grid Paper As mentioned in previous lessons, your grid paper is probably going to be different than that in the book....

There is something especially meaningful and rewarding about watching simple practice turn into something beautiful. If you’ve been following along with us in our Brushwork handicraft series, practicing the same strokes over and over, again and again, you may have at some point wondered if it’s really doing anything. This simple watercolor Christmas wreath project is here to remind you that it is. Today, we are bringing together our lessons and skills developed in the last few months, to show how a few, carefully practiced skills can be surprisingly stunning. A Simple Christmas Wreath Project This simple watercolor Christmas wreath is...

I'm so excited for brushwork, lesson #14! This lesson from the book, Brushwork Elementary Brush-Forms by Marion Hudson is a lesson on the violet. It's using the brush forms that we've been learning in our previous lesson to make a different type of flower and leaves. Growing up in the north, these were what violets looked like. We always had violets in our home because they were one of my Mom's favorite flowers. My Dad would buy them for her regularly and she would always have a small pot of them on the dining room table. ...
