It took seventeen days for all of our butterflies to emerge from their chrysalides.  No matter how many times you see this transformation, it remains fascinating and magical.  Although I would have liked to keep our butterflies for a couple of days, but they were somewhat lethargic, so I was worried that they needed to be set free into their natural environment. Our caterpillar and butterfly unit study has so far consisted mainly of watching caterpillars turn into butterflies in our Insect Lore Butterfly Garden.  You can follow along with our day to day observations and you can see our release of the butterflies.    We did, however, add on a few activities and some reading to supplement and direct our observations.  Much of my internet research can be found on my Nature Study Pinterest Board, which you are welcome to browse and follow. Clark and Luci have both been interested in caterpillars and butterflies for some time. One thing I have learned so far in our homeschool journey is that there is never a better time to learn more about something than when the kids are interested in it. I would also venture a guess that there probably isn't a better way to learn about how caterpillars become butterflies than to watch them grow in your home.
