Did anybody catch a glimpse of the Super-Star on June 30th? For us homeschoolers, this is a teaching moment; a simple lesson in astronomy. According to astronomers, the planets Venus and Jupiter passed so dramatically close to each other in the sky that they appeared to the naked eye to be one celestial body, or as a “Super-Star.”  Some have even theorized that this is the “Star of Bethlehem” that was seen over 2000 years ago on the night of Jesus’ birth.  Apparently these two planets, the two brightest objects in the sky (besides the Sun and Moon, of course), have not...

Clark and Luci are developing a fascination with the Solar System.  It’s been our whole focus this week as we read books, stayed up late to get a good glimpse of the moon, drew and colored the planets and anything else we can find that is Solar System related! Stick around for a beginner's guide to the solar system! A Solar System Panorama We started out with our favorite, enormous strip of paper, stretching through the entire entrance to our home.  For Clark and Luci, the bigger it is, the better! Then with a few library books on hand, with all of us on the...

We’ve been reading Harold and the Purple Crayon.  In the beginning of the book Harold draws a crescent moon to light up the night as he goes for a walk.  This began our interest in the moon, which has led to an interest in the solar system.  This is how rabbit trails happen in the Five in a Row curriculum, and I love it.  As the children show an interest in a subject, we explore it, learning as we go. So far we’ve learned about the phases of the moon, which I blogged about HERE. As I searched for information and ideas,...

We have been reading Harold and the Purple Crayon as part of our Five in a Row curriculum.  In this book, Harold goes on an adventure in the middle of the night with his purple crayon, drawing whatever and wherever his imagination leads.  In the very beginning, he realized he needed light and so he drew a moon to light his way. As part of the science component, we decided to learn a little bit about the moon.  When I told this to Clark, he scoffed at me, saying: “What?!  Why would we learn about the moon?!  All it does is give off light!”  Clearly, we can benefit from some education!    From what I...

Winter has finally hit us in Texas!  Temperatures had been quite warm here, rarely dipping into “coat weather.”  Contrary to all logic, I actually found myself complaining that we hadn’t even had a winter yet!  I mean, is that a PROBLEM?!  I typically hate winter, but when I say that, I’m really referring to the unending winters of my younger days in Canada.  Winter here in Texas seems to consist of a day or two of ice and if we have any luck, some snow – or even better, sticky snow! The cold weather came at the perfect time for us because...

As part of the science component in our study of the book Very Last First Time, we decided to look at some of the properties of salt water.  Our first experiment was to look at how evaporation would separate salt water. Salt Water Evaporation Experiment This super simple salt water evaporation experiment is a very basic experiment, but I wanted to introduce the Scientific Method right from the beginning.  We started very basically; I figured it was probably age-appropriate to cut out the research step.  I did a short search but didn’t come up with exactly what I was looking for, so I created my own form:  “My...
