Top 5 Best Springtime Activities for Homeschoolers

Spring is a Homeschooling family’s favorite season. The warming, yet still fresh air, the brightly blooming wild flowers, and the lingering days beckon to children and parents alike. There truly can’t be a more wonderful time to get outside, explore nature, and experience the fun and educational springtime activities that this season provides. Some of our favorite springtime activities cost little-to-nothing but serve to create special memories together, as well as to teach new and valuable skills. Here are our top 5 best springtime activities for homeschoolers:

1. Plant a Garden

As the last frost finally comes and Spring arrives, it is the perfect time to start a garden. Few things are as important as learning to grow your own food. Gardening is also a great way to teach children about nature, biology, and environmental responsibility, all while getting some fresh air and exercise. You can start small with a few pots of herbs or vegetables, or plan a more elaborate garden with different flowers, plants, and vegetables.

You may have a few failures (we’ve had more than I can count), but we view each fail as a learning opportunity and we try again.

2. Take a Springtime Nature Walk with Your Homeschoolers

Take advantage of the spring weather and go for a nature walk with your homeschooling child. We like to explore nearby parks, hiking trails, and nature preserves. The children will love exploring the plants, animals, and insects that are emerging from their winter slumber. We try to remember to bring along a field guide to help identify the local birds and plants. Packing a pair or two of binoculars and a camera also help to make it one of our favorite fun and educational springtime activities for homeschoolers

3. Learn about Spring Holidays

Spring is a season full of holidays and traditions. Take the opportunity to learn about the history, culture, and significance of holidays such as Easter, Passover, Earth Day, and Arbor Day. You can read books, watch movies, or – our favorite, make crafts related to each holiday.

4. Have a Picnic With Your Homeschoolers

Enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather by having a picnic with your homeschooling child. You can pack a basket with your favorite snacks and drinks, and head to a local park or scenic spot. You can also make it a learning experience by incorporating math skills to calculate the cost of the items and calories, or social studies by discussing the history of picnics. Remember, a picnic is the perfect beginning or end to a nature walk, so embrace the outdoors and make some memories!

5. Make Springtime-Themed Crafts

Get creative and make spring-themed crafts with your homeschooling child. In the past, we’ve made birdhouses, bouquets of tissue paper flowers, and painted rocks. These crafts are not only fun and engaging, but also help develop fine motor skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Conclusion

Spring is a season full of wonder and opportunities for homeschooling children to learn, explore, and have fun. By planting a garden, taking a nature walk, learning about spring holidays, having a picnic, and making spring-themed crafts, you and your homeschooling child can make the most of this delightful season.
