Five in a Row: Night of the Moonjellies, Part 2

Five in a Row: Night of the Moonjellies, Part 2

I had only half a day with the kids today before heading out to a meeting. I don’t normally try to do educational things on the weekend, but the kids were so in to the whole jellyfish thing, I decided to do another Five in a Row day.

Today we read Night of the Moonjellies on Clark’s bed, which we pretended was blue water. This was a riot for them and spent most of the story on top of me, the boat.

Once the story was done, I had printed out a little game for them to play. It was pictures of a different species of ocean life. They had to match the fish and animals up with their shadows. They both enjoyed this, especially Luci, who has since asked to play and replay it several times. I think it was too easy for them, but they were having fun!

Once everything was matched, they decided they wanted to play “ocean.”  They probably spent over an hour pretending they were fish in the sea.

Jellyfish Hotdogs

I love making fun foods for the kids – especially when it corelates to what we’re learning about. For lunch, I thought we’d have a little fun. We made some jellyfish from hotdogs and spaghetti that I’d seen someplace online.  They were super-easy to make and they kids absolutely loved them!  I just stuck a few uncooked spaghetti noodles into uncooked hotdogs and then boiled them together.  I boiled them a little longer that I normally would (about 12 minutes) so that the part of the noodle inside the hotdog would be softer.

The kids were very excited to see the “jellyfish” swimming around in the boiling water.  Clark even reminded me to put salt in the water because jellyfish live in salt water.  I love seeing what they are retaining!

The hotdog jellyfish came out great and the kids had a lot of fun eating them!

After a bath (with glowsticks and Dollar Store moonjellies) we had a dessert. Clark and Luci are always happy to help me make a dessert. They have been playing a Strawberry Shortcake game on my Kindle, where they bake a cake and put different fruit toppings on it.  So we had strawberries and blueberries and they could put whatever they wanted on their cake.    I think they ate half of them before putting them on their cake, but they thought it was pretty cool.

Don’t miss the rest of our Five in a Row: Night of the Moonjellies Study! Here’s Part 1, Part 3, and Part 4.
