We’ve been studying the children’s book, Miss Rumphius as part of our Five in a Row Curriculum.  Let me just say that if you have not read this to your children yet, get down to the library and get it.  It is an absolute treasure. Our favorite part of each row is the art portion.  With each new book we discover new mediums, new ideas, new concepts. The children (and I) love this part, and the chance for exploring art with Miss Rumphius was no different. The FIAR guidebook suggested several different angles, so we chose a couple of them.  The first was...

At this time of the year, there is always a lot of discussion whether to continue to homeschool throughout the summer.  We started to homeschool Clark one year ago, just as he was graduating from his little preschool.  We thought we would work through the summer, see how it went and make a more permanent decision before school started in September. Needless to say, we were convinced in the first month and we have never looked back. Do We Homeschool Through the Summer? Or Not? Now as we approach our first official summer, we sat down to discuss whether we would continue to...

As part of our Five in a Row curriculum, we have been studying the book, Miss Rumphius.  It is such a sweet book about a woman who lived a full and wonderful life, and in the end wanted to do something to make the world a more beautiful place.  She did this by planting lupines.  Everywhere.  I loved this because I love lupines! Of course, this story led to the study of plants, seeds and gardening, and a yearly refresh for last year's fairy garden.  It’s pretty awesome when you can incorporate your daily activities into your learning so seamlessly! Last Year's Fairy...

There are a few things I have refused to allow into my home.  A wretched TV show about a sponge is at the top of my list, an annoying kid named Caillou, and right under that, in big capital letters has always been LEGO. I HATE LEGO.  I grew up in a busy household full of children and enough Lego to sink a ship.  There was Lego, Lego everywhere.  It didn’t matter how many times the kids were asked to clean it up, there was always a piece of Lego somewhere, waiting for me to step on it.  In fact, I am quite certain that...

We probably all know that single person – in their mid-twenties, early thirties – never married, no kids with a surprising amount of advice and judgment on how to raise children.  I’ve watched them with a giggle as they pass out advice on how to get kids to sleep at night, how to make them eat their veggies and how inappropriate it is to wear Superhero costumes to the grocery store.  I’ve watched Facebook feeds, with my mouth hanging open in shock, as these wise people tell their horror stories of witnessing a toddler meltdown at the mall and the disgraceful behavior of children at a restaurant.  I know...

We love Five in a Row: Harold and the Purple Crayon!  This book is an absolute creative delight – and in this house, we love anything creative!  Book Review This is the story of a cute little, bald-headed baby boy who, instead of going to sleep, decides to go for a walk in the moonlight.  Little Harold creates his own adventures using only his purple crayon and a huge imagination. I loved this book on many different levels.  I initially wondered why this very simple book was assigned to Volume 2 of the Five in a Row workbook and not the first Volume. But, as...
