The Day a Swan Came to Our Pond

The Day a Swan Came to Our Pond

Although we are not going to officially be starting homeschool until next year (2014) when Clark would be starting Kindergarten, I’ve been thinking trying to think of what it is going to look like for us. Ideally, I want to incorporate lots of nature and outdoor activities into our daily life. As a new homeschooler, I am still learning what that will involve. But in the meantime, I would like to start inserting this ideal into our lives.

The Perfect Opportunity

Today presented the perfect opportunity. As I was driving Clark to his Preschool, we passed our local park and noticed that a swan had come to visit! We often come to this park to run and play. We’ve often seen and fed the ducks, but never have we seen a swan! We agreed right then and there that as soon as Clark’s school was over, we would come straight back to the park to see and feed the swan.

Clearly, I wasn’t the only one who was excited! Luci and I came home and did some research as to what we could take to feed the swan. We found out bread, lettuce and corn were all swan favorites, so we packed some swan snacks for the afternoon.

As promised, we went straight to the park as soon as we picked Clark up from school. He was even more excited to see that we’d brought his “new” scooter. He had not had the chance to try out yet! Luci was just excited to get outside and run ahead of us.

While the ducks saw us coming and quickly started swimming the in opposite direction, as they always seem to do, the swan did not. She actually swam towards us, so we threw her some bread crumbs and that brought her closer and closer.

I had to physically stop Luci from walking right into the water, up to the swan. She truly looooooves animals. Not so surprisingly, the ducks all had a change of heart when they saw the bread buffet and came swimming over to join. So, we fed them too.

We were pretty much finished with our bread when these bullies flew in and came hissing at us, so we hightailed it out of there in a hurry.
