Homeschool

I don’t know when Dr. Seuss’ birthday became a big week-long event at school, but it did and I love it!  I look forward to it all year.  I love to see what dress-up ideas and activities the teachers are going to come up with. This year we will be leaving on our vacation, so we will be missing the majority of the celebration, but we will be there for the “Dress-up-in-your-favorite-Dr. Seuss-character Day”!  This year we decided to be a red fish and a blue fish from the book “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”  I crocheted them hats to...

Maybe I should have seen this one coming.  I should have known better than to promise paints to my preschoolers on the second day of a diet.  But I did and I was awoken by two eager little kiddos this morning, asking:  "Can we paint now?  Can we paint now?"  They wouldn't stop until I grudgingly got up and showered. They horsed down their breakfasts so that they could get their paint aprons on.  Who knew that was so exciting?!  I thought we would start simply and see how it all went, so we began with a couple of favorites,...

We are several days into our Very Rare Winter Wonderland, here in Texas. The weather is freezing and several inches of ice still cover the ground. Here in Texas, it snows or ices so rarely that when it does, there are no resources to manage it. There are a few trucks with sand available for the roads, but at times like this, those are clearly inadequate, so everything literally shuts down. This includes stores, schools, places of business. The roads are eerily empty. Since I work in a hospital, I still have to make...

While researching the different homeschool methods for my children, a friend directed me to the book A Charlotte Mason Companion: by Karen Andreola.  I have been devouring it obsessively for the past couple of weeks. Can I just say, I LOVE THIS BOOK!  In fact, at the risk of sounding utterly corny, I would say this book resonates in my soul.  I had no idea what homeschooling could look like and how it could nourish not only my children's minds, but also their souls and spirits. I am learning all kinds of things about Charlotte Mason's methods, all...

On Fridays, Clark is home from his Preschool, so I have started to incorporate a little homeschooling into our routine. At this point, I am casually introducing some early training for successful habits. The one thing I've heard over and over and over again from Moms hesitant to homeschool is that they "don't have the patience." Well, friends, I have the least patience of anyone I know. However, I don't actually believe that lack of patience is a reason not to homeschool. When we put in the effort to train our children while they are...

Although we are not going to officially be starting homeschool until next year (2014) when Clark would be starting Kindergarten, I've been thinking trying to think of what it is going to look like for us. Ideally, I want to incorporate lots of nature and outdoor activities into our daily life. As a new homeschooler, I am still learning what that will involve. But in the meantime, I would like to start inserting this ideal into our lives. The Perfect Opportunity Today presented the perfect opportunity. As I was driving Clark to his Preschool, we passed...
