Yesterday was Clark's preschool graduation. Preschool gets out a little earlier than the elementary and high schools, thank-goodness!  I've been so excited for this day!  We started at this school as a Mother's Day Out so Clark could have some fun playing with other kids. I was trying to work full-time night shift and somehow manage a newborn. We ended up staying with them because Clark loved it so much. Our caterpillar and butterfly unit study has so far consisted mainly of watching caterpillars turn into butterflies in our Insect Lore Butterfly Garden.  You can follow along with our day to day observations and you can see our release of the butterflies.    We did, however, add on a few activities and some reading to supplement and direct our observations.  Much of my internet research can be found on my Nature Study Pinterest Board, which you are welcome to browse and follow. Clark and Luci have both been interested in caterpillars and butterflies for some time. One thing I have learned so far in our homeschool journey is that there is never a better time to learn more about something than when the kids are interested in it. I would also venture a guess that there probably isn't a better way to learn about how caterpillars become butterflies than to watch them grow in your home. Math is not Clark's favorite subject.  It wasn't mine either, so I get it. It's always a bit of a struggle to stay focused.  Clark has a very creative brain and, like me, he needs a creative outlet.  Math is just the wrong side of the brain for that!  So in order for him to get engaged in his math lesson we've got to find ways incorporate creativity into the math. What kid doesn't love a picnic, right? For Clark's birthday yesterday, my kids wanted a picnic - but with bugs. Everything is about bugs right now. So, I made them this cute little lunch scene with snails and toadstools and even included a couple of plastic bugs. It doesn't take much to make these kids happy!
