Craft Projects

Along with our reading of the books"Storm in the Night" and "Thunder Cake," we are studying weather.  Weather is a fantastic subject to learn about in the younger grades for several reasons. First of all, it's something that kids can observe and document every single day. Weather will spark their interest because it is ever-changing and sometimes dramatic. It's also a great way to encourage curiosity and a fascination in the beauty of nature and science. We've been working hard, learning how to read a thermometer, learning how to identify the different types of clouds, and beginning to...

I don’t know when Dr. Seuss’ birthday became a big week-long event at school, but it did and I love it!  I look forward to it all year.  I love to see what dress-up ideas and activities the teachers are going to come up with. This year we will be leaving on our vacation, so we will be missing the majority of the celebration, but we will be there for the “Dress-up-in-your-favorite-Dr. Seuss-character Day”!  This year we decided to be a red fish and a blue fish from the book “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”  I crocheted them hats to...

I have just discovered peg dolls on Pinterest.  I've definitively had my share of Pinterest fails, but this is a win for sure!  As a crafty household, I can say with certainty, that these little pieces of wood have us pegged! Can you just imagine the millions of educational ideas, and hours of sheer entertainment for the kids!  I pinned about one million ideas, found a website that sells the unfinished wooden peg for pennies and immediately bought a box full.   From the moment I got them, the kids went crazy.  After quickly realizing I needed to take control or they...

Maybe I should have seen this one coming.  I should have known better than to promise paints to my preschoolers on the second day of a diet.  Or just as a simple rule: NEVER PROMISE A CRAFT DAY WHEN STARTING A DIET! Today, I was awoken by two eager little kiddos this morning, asking:  "Can we paint now?  Can we paint now?"  They wouldn't stop until I grudgingly got up and showered. They horsed down their breakfasts so that they could get their paint aprons on.  Who knew that was so exciting?!  And who knew that I should...

It's the Thanksgiving Holidays! Happy Thanksgiving! Clark's preschool is closed this week and I couldn't be happier. It's so nice and relaxing not to have to worry about getting him ready and off to school  No stress in the morning!  The tougher part is keeping them both kids occupied and happy all day while I clean the entire house, get all the laundry done and prepare for family coming in from out of town for the holiday.    Immediately after breakfast, I pulled out my well-hidden play dough.  I reserve it for special occasions, so it keeps...
