Our most recent Five in a Row book has been The Rag Coat, by Lauren Mills.  In this story, the main character, Minna’s father works in the coal mines.  He becomes sick and eventually dies from what is presumably Black Lung Disease.  This was an ideal opening for a discussion on lungs and the respiratory system. We have been studying the classic children’s book, Madeline, which served as an introduction to a series I wanted to do with the children on Health and Wellness. We had some awesome Halloween fun this week.  I’ll admit I was a little worried about my kids missing out on some fun traditions since they no longer attend a school, and I had to work a couple of days, but our week was full of activities that kept us very busy. Along with our reading of the books"Storm in the Night" and "Thunder Cake," we are studying weather.  Weather is a fantastic subject to learn about in the younger grades for several reasons. I don’t know when Dr. Seuss’ birthday became a big week-long event at school, but it did and I love it!  I look forward to it all year.  I love to see what dress-up ideas and activities the teachers are going to come up with.
